Understanding Your Panchang: Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana Explained

A complete guide to the five limbs of Panchang -- Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and Vara -- and how to read today's Panchang for choosing auspicious timings.

Understanding Your Panchang: Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana Explained

Panchang (or Panchanga) is the Hindu calendar and almanack that provides five essential pieces of information about any given day. The word "Panchang" literally means "five limbs" -- Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (auspicious combination), Karana (half-day), and Vara (weekday).

Tithi -- The Lunar Day

Tithi is the angular distance between the Sun and Moon, divided into 30 segments (15 in the waxing phase, 15 in the waning). Each Tithi has specific qualities -- for example, Dwitiya (2nd) is good for starting journeys, while Chaturdashi (14th) is considered inauspicious for most activities. Your birth Tithi reveals your emotional nature and instinctual responses.

Nakshatra -- The Lunar Mansion

As the Moon travels through the sky, it passes through 27 Nakshatras, spending approximately one day in each. The Nakshatra of the day influences collective energy and can be used for electional astrology (Muhurta). Each Nakshatra has a ruling deity, planet, and unique characteristics.

How to Use Today's Panchang

Check the Panchang before scheduling important events. Avoid Rahu Kaal (approximately 1.5 hours daily ruled by Rahu) for new beginnings. Use the Abhijit Muhurta (the midday auspicious window) for important ceremonies when possible. Our daily Panchang page updates automatically with today's data.
